Little Pilgrims Pack a Feast

When most of us say, "We're starving!" it's because we've missed breakfast, lunch, snack or dinner that day. In reality, we're only hungry because our schedule was so full that we were too busy to eat. That's not the case for many men, women and children who live right here in our own community and struggle to feed their families.

In San Mateo County,

  • 15,000 individuals suffer from chronic hunger (4,472 are children)
  • 43,218 individuals struggle to find enough food to eat (13,199 are children)

On Saturday, November 3, over 50 BMC members and their families came together to decorate a large box that was to be filled with canned foods and non perishable items we had organized in our own miniature grocery store in the Lincoln School gym! Watching the kids stamp, color and "sticker" the boxes was so gratifying. These boxes were truly filled with love! In two hours and with the help of moms, dads, kids and grandparents, we had prepared 48 boxes for families visiting the Samaritan House. In November and December, Samaritan House distributes food and gifts to approximately 8,600 people in need, including thousands of children!

This was truly a collaborative effort that brought together many members of the BMC and the wider community. Thank you to everyone who contributed an additional $10 to your membership dues for our outreach efforts when you joined or renewed! We are also extremely grateful to the many BMC moms who volunteered their time to make this event such a success! And from the wider community, we received generous donations of goods and services from The Burlingame School District & Lincoln School Principal Lynn Gurnee, Lunardi's Markets and Staples. And finally, thank you to Noah's Bagels, Safeway and Starbucks for donating bagels, doughnuts and coffee for our volunteers on event day!
