Bicycles for Shelter Network
Imagine the surprise on your child's face if, on the morning of their birthday, they were greeted by a shiny, new bicycle. Now imagine the feeling of elation felt by homeless children from First Step in San Mateo, a part of Shelter Network, when they were presented with brand new bicycles. A group of BMC members made that happen as part of a team-building event and it was an incredibly meaningful and touching experience for all who participated.
BMC members were tasked with building a "product". The challenge was to build the most exciting product and to craft a sales pitch. One winner would be selected. They could use anything in the room to enhance their final product and they had a mere 20 minutes to complete the activity. They were shown the room full of unassembled bikes and a table full of fun accessories. The chaos that ensued was truly memorable. After each team had a chance to share why their bike was best, the facilitator said, "All of these bikes are awesome. You've done a great job. I can't decide on the winner, let's let the customer decide". The doors opened and a stream of young children, between the ages and 3 and 5, came into the room. The looks of amazement, wonder, and joy were enough to bring tears to your eyes.
The activity ended as a reminder of why we want to be a part of this amazing organization. It's to make a difference - in our lives as moms, in the lives of our children and families, and in the lives of the members of our broader community. Anything is possible if you put your heart and mind to it. Giving just a little can go a long way. To learn more about the Shelter Network, you can visit their website at www.shelternetwork.org.
